de Blob is a video game for Nintendo's Wii console . The game was originally developed as a PC game by Utrecht students. The publisher THQ secured the rights for a console conversion, which was carried out by the Australian studio Blue Tongue . The Wii version was released in Germany at the end of September 2008.

For Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, a second part of de Blob was released on February 25, 2011.

Both parts were released for the Nintendo Switch in August 2018.

action

"De Blob" and his colleagues from the color underground are trying to free Chroma City from the rule of the colorless INKT Corporation. They fight their way from one part of the city to the next to achieve this goal.

Game idea

In de Blob is a so-called platform or jump-'n'-Run game. In addition to fulfilling various jobs the basic game aim is monochrome cityscapes by jumping back and forth with the protagonist , a dollop (Engl. Blob ) to design as possible in as many different colors.

The concept of the game is largely based on well-known elements of the platformer genre: the main character “de Blob” is controlled by jumping and running through the levels and opponents are defeated by jumping on them; the levels must be mastered within a given time frame.

Unconventional game controls

In addition to the well-known jump-'n'-run elements, the game also has an unconventional to - for the jump-'n'-run genre - innovative element. By painting the game environment in different colors, the player changes it not only on the outside; At the same time he also influences the instrumentation and the structure of the background music. The melody takes on elements of modern swing, jazz and, among other things, hip-hop.

development

The original PC game was developed by nine students from the Hogeschool van de Kunsten in Utrecht. It served as a PR campaign for the renovation of the Utrecht train station area and let the pawn roll through a model of the city as it would look ten years from now. It first received attention in 2006 when the English edition of Edge magazine recognized it as Internet Game of the Month in its October issue. It received further attention in 2007 as a finalist in the Slamdance Guerilla Game Maker Competition of the Slamdance Film Festival and when it was screened at the 2007 Independent Games Festival alongside other student works.

Awards

The Wii game was recognized by IGN with 2 of 14 Wii Awards for best platform game and most innovative design.

Offshoot

De Blob also appeared as a mobile game.
