De Noord (full name in Dutch De Noord Molen , German  Die Nordmühle ) is a Dutch windmill in Schiedam , South Holland , the Netherlands . For a long time it was the tallest windmill in the world.

history

A group of particularly tall gallery Dutch windmills has shaped the image of Schiedam since the 18th century . In the past, these mills were primarily used to grind malt for the numerous local distilleries . Of the former 20 Schiedam mills , only five have survived today. Of these, De Noord (built in 1803) is the highest with a canopy height (without wings) of 33.3 m. The wingspan is 26.6 meters.

Since the cap of the former 38 m high mill De Hoop in Breda was dismantled in 1927, De Noord has been the tallest historic windmill in the world.

The mill ceased operations in the early 1930s. In 1937 the upper part of the mill was torn down, so that only a stump remained. In 1955, the community of Schiedam bought the stump in order to preserve and restore the monument. In two construction phases, 1962 and 1971, the upper part was rebuilt in its old height. The wind power drive and the grinder were also restored to working order.

The mill retained the status of the tallest windmill in the world until 2006, when the De Nolet windmill, a wind turbine built in the style of a historic windmill, was rebuilt nearby.

Today De Noord houses a restaurant.
