The modern Schney Castle is located in Schney , a district of the city of Lichtenfels in the Lichtenfels district in the Bavarian administrative district of Upper Franconia .

history

The castle was built around 1680 to 1690 instead of an older castle complex as the residence and administrative seat of the von Schaumberg family . After the Schneyer line of the von Schaumberg family died out, the castle passed into the possession of the Holstein family von Brockdorff in 1706 , whose descendants owned the castle until 1873.

In 1950 the local gymnastics club, Freie Turnerschaft Schney, bought the building and used it as a gym .

The castle currently houses the Franconian Academy conference center .

As a protected architectural monument , the castle is managed by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation under monument number D-4-78-139-267 . Due to archaeological findings in the area of the castle, which are related to the medieval core of the building, the complex as a whole is also a ground monument with the number D-4-5832-0219 .
