history

Redwitz Castle

A castle stood on the property from the middle of the 13th to the middle of the 14th century, built by a branch of the Marschälke von Kunstadt. The first lord of the castle was either an Iring von Kunstadt (or von Redwitz ) or an Erchinpert of Kunstadt (or von Redwitz).

At the end of the 13th century, the north wing was built as the first part of today's castle. The castle gave way to the castle bit by bit. In the Peasants' War in 1525 one of the two bower was burned down and the other was seriously damaged. In the same year, Berthold von Redwitz rebuilt the castle. The southern building was built at the beginning of the 17th century. The expansion of the west wing with the courtyard arcades and the stair tower probably took place a little earlier. The east wing was mentioned for the first time in 1697. In 1873 Baron Wilhelm Theodor von Redwitz sold the castle to the Horber brewery owner Johann Gampert. Since 1952, the castle has been owned by the Archdiocese of Bamberg and subsequently changed by private owners, some of which were improperly converted and some of them fell into disrepair. In 2015 there was another change of ownership.
