Geiskirche fortification section

The portion fixing Geiskirche is a small Outbound prehistoric fortification in the town Weismain in the Upper Franconian district of Lichtenfels in Bavaria .

It is located about 470 meters north-northeast of the local church of Schammendorf , a district of Weismain, on a mountain spur in the Schammenleithe forest area (also Schammendorfer Leithe), which rises between the Weismain valley and a side valley. No historical or archaeological information is known about this section fortification, it is roughly dated as prehistoric. Only a simple section wall has survived from the complex, the site is protected as a ground monument number D-4-5933-0040: Prehistoric section fortification.

description

The rather small fortification is located at around 460  m above sea level. NN altitude and thus around 120  meters above the valley floor of the Weismain on a north-northwest facing mountain spur in the Schammenleithe. This drops steeply on three sides to the valley, in the west and at its tip in the north to Weismain, the east side is protected by the Steintal, a dry valley that descends from the adjacent plateau . In addition, cliffs on the northwest, north and east sides of the spur secured the facility. Only the attack side in the south-southeast, where the spur merges a few meters slightly uphill into the Jura plateau , required fortification. For this purpose, a 70-meter-long and slightly outwardly curved section wall was built 60 meters in front of the spur tip. This is preserved up to a height of one and a half meters and four meters wide. It ends on both sides at the slope edge, in the west there is a ten meter long break in the rampart 20 meters from the edge. The earlier access to the facility cannot be located with certainty; it may have been in the area of this ten-meter-wide incision.
