The windmill De Vrouw Johanna is a gallery Dutch company in Emden in East Frisia . The mill was built in 1804 on the Emder Wall , the early modern city fortifications of Emden. The Johanna Mill is a successor to a windmill that already existed there. The mill is a listed building and is owned by the city of Emden, which has leased the building to the Emden Mill Association .
description
The total height of the three-story mill is 24 meters. The clinker substructure measures 12.35 meters to the upper edge of the gallery. It was constructed in such a way that horse-drawn vehicles could drive through it for loading and unloading. The wall is 80 centimeters thick at the base and 67 centimeters on the third floor. The octagon has a height of 12.90 meters, measured from the mill rim to the center of the axis. The mill does not have a compass rose, but rather a so-called codend , at the lower end of which is the Kröj reel (rotary winch). With this, the canopy and the wings were crowned (turned) into the wind .
restoration
In October 1994 the Emden Mill Association was founded, which is responsible for the restoration of the monument. The restoration was made possible by grants from the Gerhard ten Doornkaat Koolman Foundation , the Hanover Monastery Chamber , the German Foundation for Monument Protection , grants from the city and donations from companies and private individuals. The Emden Employment Office (today: Employment Agency) supported the efforts with job creation measures. The efforts suffered a setback in 1997: the octagon, which had to be removed for safety reasons in the spring of that year, fell victim to an arson attack on the night of June 24th to 25th. On October 13, 1998, a mobile crane finally placed the new octagon and the restored mill cap on the mill stump. The stone octagon also received a new gallery. On December 22, 1999, the assembly of the wings began, which was completed in the spring of 2000. With the installation of two grinding aisles and one peeling gear, the mill is able to grind or peel grain again. For the 200th birthday of the mill in 2004, the opening event for the 11th German Milling Day was celebrated in Emden.
use
The mill can be visited by arrangement with the Emden Mill Association. The miller's house next to the mill has been used by the shipping company AG Ems since 2007, which has prepared accommodation for tourists there. Directly next to the mill is a so-called paddle-and-pedal station , where visitors can choose to borrow bicycles or canoes in order to get to a neighboring station, where the means of transport are returned. The paddle-and-pedal station is only a few meters from the mill on the Emden city moat, which is part of the extensive East Frisian waterway network. Immediately at the mill, the low-level trek branches off from the city moat and connects the small sea to the northeast with the city.
