Dean came
Dean L. Kamen (born April 5, 1951 in Rockville Center , Long Island , New York ) is an American entrepreneur and inventor. He broke off studying at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute . His father is Jack Kamen, an illustrator on Weird Science and other EC comics .
Inventions
Kamen's most famous invention is the Segway Personal Transporter , a revolutionary electric scooter for transporting people. Kamen had previously invented the innovative iBot (electric wheelchair) , which can climb stairs and lift its user at eye level with standing people. Kamen's invention of a mobile dialysis system was groundbreaking in the medical field.
Awards
Kamen has received numerous awards for his inventions. In 1997 he was elected to the American National Academy of Engineering , received a Heinz Award in 1999 and was honored with the National Medal of Technology in 2000 by then US President Bill Clinton . In 2002, Kamen received the Lemelson-MIT Prize for Inventors. In 2005, Kamen was inducted into the American National Inventors Hall of Fame and in 2006 received the UN's Global Humanitarian Action Award . In 2011 he received the Benjamin Franklin Medal . Kamen holds honorary doctorates from Kettering University (2001), Wentworth Institute of Technology (2004), Bates College (2007), Georgia Institute of Technology (2008) and Plymouth State University (2008).
FIRST
In 1989, Kamen founded the robotics organization For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) in the USA to introduce high school students to scientific thinking and to get them excited about application-oriented technologies. Since 1992, FIRST has organized robotics programs in which children ( First Lego League ) and young people ( First Tech Challenge ) design, build and program robots to cope with a task set by FIRST. In 2011 more than 18,323 teams with a total of more than 204,000 students took part. Kamen is still the driving force behind FIRST today.
DEKA
DEKA Research & Development Corporation is a company that was founded by Kamen in 1982 and is based in New Hampshire , New England (North Dakota) . The company name is an acronym from the name of the founder De an Ka men. DEKA holds among other things the patent for the IBot (electric wheelchair) and is the main sponsor and strategic partner of FIRST. The latest development from DEKA is the Luke arm, a prosthesis that can be controlled via electrical signals from the muscles.
