Deatrick Nichols (born June 8, 1994 in Miami ) is an American football cornerback who plays for the New Orleans Saints in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for South Florida .

Early life and high school

Nichols was born and raised in Miami, Florida, and was a childhood friend of his future South Florida teammate and later running back for the Cincinnati Bengals , Quinton Flowers . He attended Miami Central High School in West Little River , Florida, where he played football and did athletics. In football, Nichols recorded 105 tackles , 12 interceptions and two forced fumbles in four years when the Rockets won the state championships in its maiden, junior and senior seasons. Nichols opted for college football at the University of South Florida, where former high school coach Telly Lockette was on the coaching staff, despite the offerings of several high-profile programs including LSU , Tennessee , Miami and Clemson .

College career

Nichols played four seasons for the South Florida Bulls and has played on the defensive as a starter for the past three years. As a freshman, Nichols came in seven games as reserve defender from the bench and started in one game. He was a starter in his sophomore season and was named to the first team of the All- American Athletic Conference (AAC) after having 62 tackles, 8.5 of them for losses, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery, and four interceptions, including the USF's only defensive touchdown that season, and recorded five passes defended. As a junior, he led the Bulls with four interceptions and seven pass defenders and made 49 tackles (2 for loss) and was included in the second team All-AAC. As a senior, Nichols scored 56 tackles, 12 pass defenses and 3 interceptions and was called back to the first selection of the AAC. Nichols ended his college career with 175 tackles, 11 interceptions (the third most frequent in school history), 24 parried passes, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, one sack, and 14.5 tackles for loss in 50 games played.

Professional career

Arizona Cardinals

Nichols signed with the Arizona Cardinals on April 28, 2018 as an Undrafted Free Agent . Nichols made his NFL debut on September 16, 2018 against the Los Angeles Rams , where he played in special teams . On October 8, 2018, he was released and reassigned to the Practice Squad . On October 18, 2018, he was promoted to the active squad, two days later he was dismissed and returned to the training squad on October 23. On December 18, 2018, he was promoted to the active squad and released from the Cardinals on December 28, 2018. Overall, Nichols appeared in his rookie season in two games, exclusively in special teams, with a tackle in appearance. On December 31, 2018, he signed a reserve / future contract with the Cardinals.

Nichols was fired from the Cardinals as part of the final squad reduction on August 31, 2019.

Houston Roughnecks

Nichols was selected by the Houston Roughnecks in the 39th round (ninth round of the fourth phase) of the 2020 XFL draft. Nichols recorded 24 tackles (three for loss), one sack, six passes defended and three interceptions (top of the league) before the 2020 XFL season was canceled due to growing concerns about the SARS-CoV-2 virus. He was put on the reserve / miscellaneous list on March 23 after signing with the Saints.
