The Debattierclub Aachen e. V. is the German and English speaking debating club in Aachen . Founded on April 2, 2008, it has been a member of the Association of Debating Clubs at Universities since September 25, 2008 . V. (VDCH). It is financed through support from the university and donations.

According to tradition among German debating clubs, the association is primarily aimed at students, but is generally open to any interested citizen. During the last few years he has gained prominence through active and successful participation in national and international debating events (see below). Currently - as of May 2016 - the International Debate Education Association (IDEA) rates it as the eighth best German debating club worldwide.

Goal of the association

The aim of the association according to the statutes is to promote and maintain the culture of debate . This is achieved by holding argumentative debates on a regular basis in accordance with the rules of the Open Parliamentary Debate (OPD) or the British Parliamentary Style (BPS) that are customary in academic debates .

These debates are held several times a week in both German and English on various topics from politics, science and philosophy.

development

The Aachen Debating Club was initiated in April 2008 as the first of its kind in Aachen by RWTH student Florian Krämer. After a few weeks it was entered in the Aachen register of associations as a non-profit organization. In September, she joined the Association of Debating Clubs at Universities.

Due to its border location in the middle of the Euregio , the club was also internationally oriented from the start. Shortly after its founding phase, an Aachen team attended the European Universities Debating Championship , then in Galway (Ireland), and made it to the semi-finals at Sciences Po IV 2011 in Le Havre and Centrale IV 2011 in Paris .

In addition to participating in debating tournaments and seminars, the club also organizes these itself. The regular debates organized by him are partially recognized by RWTH as a course with the possibility of awarding a certificate of achievement.
