Defender is a Dutch power and speed metal band from Beverwijk , founded in 1984, disbanded in 1990 and reunited in 2007.

history

The band was formed towards the end of 1984 after guitarist Bart van Rixel left his previous band Hammerhawk . At a Queensrÿche concert in Amsterdam , van Rixel met Remco Bouwens, who was to join the band as a drummer. A short time later, singer Simon Menting and bassist Harm Noort joined the band, whereupon the Bang went to the Oktopus Studio in early 1985 to record their first demo, which was released that same year under the name Tales of the Unexpected . Shortly after the recordings, Jozzy Baltus joined the band as another guitarist. The release followed appearances with Agent Steel and Mad Max , as well as Martyr , Allied Forces , Hammerhawk and Cyclone in 1985 and 1986. Through these appearances, the band reached a contract with Metalloid Records . In the winter of 1985 test recordings were made in the Silvox studio . However, after the release of the new Martyr album, the label no longer had enough money to release an album for Defender. In the summer of 1986, guitarist Baltus left the band and was replaced by the 15-year-old Stef Köhler. In September of the same year guitarist van Rixel left the band, so the group did not play a concert for a year. In the autumn of 1986 the band became aware of guitarist Henk Verheul at a concert by Angantyr in Alkmaar , and they then picked him up.

In 1987 the EP City ad Mortis followed , followed by the band consisting of singer Simon Menting, guitarists Henk Verneul and Stef Köhler, drummer Remco Bonsma and bassist Haarm Nort. The publication followed various appearances. The EP also got a review in Rock Hard . As a result, bassist Noort left the band and was replaced by Arwin Vengers. After working on more songs, the band went to the Silverfox Studio to record the single Journey to the Unexpected , which was released in 1989. The band also went on tour through the Netherlands together with Jewel . With the help of staff from Aardschok magazine, the band managed to tour with Toxic . The tour began in January 1990 in Katwijk , where the band had played with Agent Steel the year before. With their single, the band also applied to various labels. Since the group could not reach a contract, the band broke up in 1990. Since 2007 the band has been playing concerts again. In the same year the band played on the Keep It True .

style

The band played fast and technically demanding Power Metal in the 1980s, comparable to the music of Savage Grace and old works by Helloween .
