Mad Max is a German melodic rock band from Münster , which consists of the singer Michael Voss, the guitarist Jürgen Breforth, the bassist Thomas "Hutch" Bauer and the drummer Axel Kruse.

Band history

Classic hard rock

Jürgen Breforth, who has just come of age and is pursuing the career path of a senior judicial officer , played the electric guitar in his native Münster in 1980. The cover band he formed with his friends was called Way Out. With the singer Andreas Baesler , a second guitarist named Wilfried “Willi” Schneider, the bassist Thomas Hoffmann and the drummer Uwe Starck, a stable unit was formed in 1981, which was renamed Mad Max at Baesler's suggestion. The first Mad Max film was still largely unknown and it was not clear that one had chosen a budding “cult name”. Breforth declared the Mad Max trilogy to be one of his favorite films in 1987. In 2006, however, he left the category open in the questionnaire and in 2013 he raved about Quentin Tarantino .

At first they played the hits of the Rolling Stones and Deep Purple , AC / DC and Status Quo , before moving on to their own compositions in order to have a bit ahead of the other cover bands in Münster. A first EP , recorded in Lüneburg , with four songs in single format was released by a small label in 1981 under the title In Concert . The first LP followed in 1982. It appeared as a self-publication and bears the words Heavy Metal above the Mad Max logo , which is missing in the new edition (also in 1982) by the Roof Records label (a cover drawing was added for this), which is why it is cited as Mad Max . If the self-production was still selling well, which actually piqued Roof Records' interest, the next sales surge did not materialize. Due to the disappointing response, Andreas Baesler withdrew. He devoted himself to a theater career and became a well-known music theater and acting director . Thomas Hoffmann was also soon no longer part of the formation. He felt constrained and preferred private life to popularity .

At the beginning of 1983 Michael Voss (vocals) and Jürgen Sander (bass) joined the musicians who were clinging to their dream of success. Voss was the youngest member of the band. He brought with him a penchant for the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and the band Kiss . In addition, an experience as a songwriter in his band from the Münster area. In the course of the year she also took her live activity to Austria , where she performed with Nightwing and Budgie . Mad Max was also the opening act for Uriah Heep and Atomic Rooster . In addition to their rehearsal room demo, these references made Mad Max attractive for the Dutch label Roadrunner Records , of which the band became the first German contractual partner.

In October 1984 the second LP Rollin 'Thunder was available. Voss had written six pieces, two Schneider and one Breforth, according to his own account melodic hard rock from the Scorpions , Accept and Dio brands . On the way to the desired professionalism, there were further line-up changes, so that in November 1984 Mad Max consisted of Michael Voss (vocals), Jürgen Breforth (guitar), Christoph "Chris" Wegmann (guitar), Roland Bergmann (bass) and Axel Kruse ( Percussion). Finding a replacement for the “left behind” colleagues (from whom Starck and Schneider founded their own band Carrie ) hadn't been difficult, as “the rock scene in Münster was super small”, as Breforth put it, and they therefore knew each other very well . The chance to win more supporters as the opening act for Yngwie Malmsteen was wasted because the group was not yet well established and the presentation was accordingly unprofessional.

The third LP Stormchild , released in autumn 1985, aroused contrary feelings within the Metal-Hammer editorial team: non - masters , not fluent in English and musically only coping with music, or a strong band, that was the issue. In the case of metal press products that were still few and far between at the time, this critical voice inevitably influenced sales, which were consequently weak. For a long time, Voss was annoyed by the Metal Hammer slap. Later Breforth also exercised self-criticism, because it was also a bad sound, lack of advertising and too many gap fillers were responsible for the failure. In December 1985 Mad Max undertook a Germany / Netherlands tour with Steeler and, due to favorable reviews in the English music press, a club tour of the United Kingdom . But Wegmann couldn't come because of his studies and left the band entirely. Gerhard “Angel” Schleifer replaced him, but then switched permanently to Sinner . The consequence of this was that Voss took over the second guitar, which he had already played in previous bands - and with Mad Max when rehearsals could not be held with the full cast.

Spurred on by a new management team , a demo was created in 1986 . It was well received by producer Michael Wagener , who referred the band to his also renowned colleague Dirk Steffens (Accept, Sinner). In autumn 1986 the recordings for the LP Night of Passion were completed. A guitar solo in Love Loaded played the Greek a guitarist Joshua Perahia. He stayed in Germany with his band Joshua in the summer, but had no rehearsal room. Mad Max shared the practice room and studio stay with Joshua, so Joshua Perahia thanked him by offering to contribute a solo. The Helloween singer Michael Kiske, who was interviewed about the album at the time, liked this solo passage best. A side effect of helping colleagues was a friendship with Joshua member Ken Tamplin , which later paid off. The production work was not completed until around the beginning of 1987. Both Roadrunner and Mad Max were n't satisfied with the mix , which is why Michael Voss flew to Dan Johnson (producer of Savatage , Crimson Glory and Agent Steel ) in Florida to have the recordings remixed. The search for a cover motif kept the band back - they just couldn't find it. Ultimately, you dedicated the cover photo for Playboy - Playmate of the Year. All possibilities were now exhausted in order to advance commercially. Bon Jovi and Europe were the role models in terms of broad acceptance among music consumers and marked their own ambitious goal. They sat on a more mass-compatible measure, on the Sweet - cover Fox on the Run , which extracted from the album as a single and MTV as a video clip was offered. The song was particularly dear to the hearts of the two band heads because Voss was a huge Sweet admirer and the album Desolation Boulevard , from which the original was taken, was Breforth's very first LP.

The album Night of Passion , which was released in March 1987, was promoted by a tour in the opening act of Stryper . It sold 35,000 times. Then there was a Germany-wide radio promotion tour by Voss. Three showcases in Hamburg , Münster and Bochum were planned for the end of April / beginning of May . At the beginning of May, however, they took the chance of a festival appearance instead, then a real tour started in May, including the three originally planned appearances, which extended into June.

A tricky label policy caused unrest in the second half of the year: A major deal signed by Mad Max with the American RCA did not come into effect because Roadrunner only wanted to license the band on the condition that three more bands from their company were taken over. While in September 1987 Roadrunner, still believing he could thread a “piggyback” agreement, Max Norman ( Ozzy Osbourne , Megadeth ) had Night of Passion revised for the American market and prepared the second single Hearts on Fire , Mad Max opened it Pretty Maids shows . Then came the situation where Roadrunner asked Norman for the original tapes back. Michael Voss, convinced that the failed RCA deal had ruined his international career, saw no prospects from one day to the next and left in September 1987. Jürgen Breforth officially announced that they had grown apart and separated by mutual agreement. Thoroughbred musician Voss defended his decision: “When I ran out of money after the last Mad Max LP, I was forced to earn my living with session bands. So we had to party like a top fourty. ”At the moment he left, he had no alternative, but soon a call came from Michael Eurich, who had just left Warlock and won him over to Casanova . Under this name, the song he wrote Hollywood Angels , which was intended for Mad Max, was released on the self-titled debut CD.

Ralf Heyne (guitar) and the Englishman Keith Ellis (vocals), a recommendation from Victory's bandleader Peter Knorrn, who recently conducted singer auditions , were hired to replace Voss . Instead of the main songwriter Voss, Breforth and Heine wrote the music and the native speaker Ellis contributed the English lyrics. In 1988 the band stated that the result was in the style of Dokken , Racer X and Yngwie Malmsteen. The texts are not used to convey index finger messages, instead they are "boy-meets-girl stories" for entertainment. In the vicinity of Los Angeles, the recording was to be supervised by Racer-X producer Steve Fontano. Publication was scheduled for early April 1989. None of this came to fruition. Roadrunner Records had lost faith in the band, which had no choice but to break up.

Breforth and Heyne did hard rock with Tanner in the early 1990s with embarrassingly bad German lyrics. Bergmann began studying music in the Netherlands and also worked as a studio musician , mainly in the jazz and blues sectors. In 1995 ex-Mad Max frontman Michael Voss and ex-Mad Max substitute guitarist Angel Schleifer, who had already written songs together for the album Night of Passion , joined forces under the name Demon Drive. Only Letter-X drummer Frank Kraus was needed in the studio, live they were supported by two Casanova members. Stylistically, it should go in the direction of “Mad Max in a contemporary guise”. In 1999 Mad Max reappeared. But it wasn't a real reunion , but the Breforth and Voss who were in contact just wanted to record newly written songs on CD. They called in the Tanner rhythm section Yogi Spittka and Carsten Tischer for support. They added two remakes of band classics to the album Never Say Never : the title track, which was originally on the album Stormchild , along with the insider hit Hearts on Fire . It was released at the end of the year.

Christian hard rock

In 2005, what was considered the "original cast" and comprised of Michael Voss, Jürgen Breforth, Axel Kruse and Roland Bergmann was reactivated. She released the album Night of White Rock on January 20, 2006 . With this a swing to the " Christian rock scene" was made. In the 1980s, according to Breforth, the lyrics weren't critical to the band members. They were typical of the style presented, not of the private attitude to life. The joint tour with the leading representatives of the US white metal Stryper in 1987 left a lasting impression. That's why he and Voss would have resorted to this feeling during the comeback of Mad Max. Breforth wrote Christian texts, Voss composed the music for them. Voss contacted the other two tribe members without being sure that they would go along. Both dealt with the faith only after their acceptance.

The lyrics are still mostly written by Breforth first, who can ask an American based in Kansas for advice, Voss then writes the music. Breforth asserted in the religious phase: "The texts do not want to preach anything, but should offer the listener an option - namely faith." He received a lot of recognition for his moderate and open-ended way of addressing Christian values. The new content orientation was visually expressed through white clothing. And a Coptic cross served as the central booklet motif .

The misfortune of another German hard rock band meant great luck for Mad Max. Actually, Châlice was supposed to do the opening act for the Deep Purple / Alice Cooper Germany tour, but a misunderstanding brought Châlice out of the coveted place at short notice. Finally, Mad Max was booked. In the first half of February 2006, in contrast to the Malmsteen tour, the group offered breakdown-free performances in front of a large audience and a bunch of press representatives. This was followed by festival appearances. These included an appearance on March 4th at Promikon , the international trade fair for Christian rock and pop music in Mannheim , and on April 22nd at the largest Christian rock festival in Switzerland, the Elements of Rock Festival , also flanked by international Christian musicians Artists.

Drummer Axel Kruse had meanwhile become a member of Jaded Heart , but was again at Mad Max's service. The two groups also shared keyboardist Henning Wanner. Michael Voss also helped out on the second guitar at a show in France at Jaded Heart. In the tour bus, the idea arose to go on a European tour in a double pack and to have drummers and keyboard players in both formations. The project was implemented in May 2006 (with Paganini as the third volume). On September 29, 2006, the EP In White came out with six new acoustic recordings, which have a certain “languor factor” and are suitable for romantic, rainy November evenings, as various reviewers have stated. The album White Sands followed on February 23, 2007 .

Over time, the two-way work became too stressful for drummer Axel Kruse, because both Jaded Heart and Mad Max not only recorded records, but also toured extensively. Kruse decided to work one hundred percent with Jaded Heart and thus against continuing his Mad Max membership. The band then intended to be presented as a trio. Regarding the live performances, they wanted to take care of a drummer and a keyboard player. Nonetheless, in early 2008 the media saw the signing of drummer Jos Zoomer, co-founder of the Dutch group Vandenberg , as a completion. The 2008 work Here We Are is an anniversary album for the (admittedly not continuous) 25th anniversary, on which many different artists (e.g. Joe Lynn Turner (ex- Rainbow , ex-Deep Purple), Michael Schenker ( Michael Schenker Group , Ex- UFO , Ex-Scorpions), Wolf Hoffmann (Ex-Accept), Don Airey (Deep Purple), Axel Rudi Pell , Sascha Gerstner (Helloween), Marc Storace ( Krokus ) and from the Christian rock scene Oz Fox from Stryper as well the especially esteemed Ken Tamplin) contributed a more or less large part. This could be a melody line , a guitar riff or a text idea , each of which was further developed, whereby the songs became collaborative work. The prominent line-up of those involved attracted media attention beyond Germany's borders, which was good for the first-time sales. The fact that this had no sustainability was due to the small record company A-Minor Records, which did not build on it. At the end of November 2008 Mad Max gave two guest appearances in Italy ( Rome and Bologna ) as the opening act for White Lion . Then in 2009 he went on tour with Axel Rudi Pell through Germany, Belgium , the Netherlands and Switzerland . Hans in 't Zandt was always on the drums. The ex- Vengeance had replaced his compatriot Jos Zoomer.

The live highlights of 2010 were the renewed appointments in the opening act of Axel Rudi Pell and the appearance at Wacken Open Air ; not to forget the second consecutive participation in the Rocklahoma Festival in Pryor , Oklahoma , which prompted the band to pay homage in song form, which opens the album Welcome America from the same year.

Stylistic reversal

At the end of 2011, the band signed a record deal with the Steamhammer label, which belongs to SPV, and released a new album in March 2012 - exactly 25 years after Night of Passion - with the original line-up from 1985. The condition on the part of the record company was to forego the "white" and to tie in with Night of Passion . Anyway, the voices had increased that had had enough of it and wished the "old Mad Max" back. The title is demonstratively Another Night of Passion . The band toured again from April to June 2012 with the band around Axel Rudi Pell. The Interceptor CD, released in 2013, contains the two tracks Streets of Tokyo and Godzilla that were created on the Japan tour with Michael Schenker, as well as (after Fever of Love on the previous album) the third Sweet cover version Turn it Down .

In April 2014, drummer Axel Kruse jumped on the Mad Max bandwagon again and ended his membership in Jaded Heart. In 2015 bassist Roland Bergmann left the band to take care of other projects. Thomas "Hutch" Bauer was brought into the band as a replacement.

style

An early article stated that Mad Max's stylistic spectrum ranged from speed metal to melodic mid-tempo rock to ballads . This gradually leveled off with the designation "Melody Metal", "Melodic Metal" or "Melodic Rock". In the Horror Infernal the typification was " Hard Rock ". Allmusic categorizes the band in the overview box as heavy metal and in the text as clichéd heavy rock.

The comparison bands were in the metal magazine Crash Dokken and Europe and with reservations Accept. Dokken, Bon Jovi, Sinner and Europe were the comparison bands in the Metal Hammer . Musically a closeness to Dokken is recognizable, lyrically to Europe, judged Michael Kiske , who was appointed by the crash as a “colleague critic”. The Horror Infernal named Bon Jovi, Dokken and Europe for stylistic orientation. The Internet magazine Lords of Metal decided on Dokken alone . Metalglory.com featured Praying Mantis and Tygers of Pan Tang in particular because of the voice . In an interview with metal-trails.com in 2013, Breforth confessed: "Dokken is our greatest influence, and back then, in the eighties, we were already being traded as the German version of Dokken."

In 1999 you could read about the "Teutonic hard rock sound [s] of the early eighties" in Rock Hard . In 2005 there was a reorientation towards Melodic Rock with Christian texts. The webzine Squealer Rocks made a multifaceted hard rock, which on Here We Are tends a little more in the AOR direction.
