Jovel Music Hall

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jovel Music Hall , also just called Jovel (from the Masematte word for good ), is a traditional club in the Westphalian city of Münster with a capacity of around 1,500 people.

The Jovel was founded at the end of 1979 by Steffi Stephan ( bassist with Udo Lindenberg ) in a former cinema between “Dondersring” and the street “Am Krug”. In 1987, after the dilapidated cinema and the neighboring bar “Neuer Krug” had to be demolished, a move to the bottling hall of the former Germania brewery followed . Numerous concerts and disco events have been held in Jovel , including Udo Lindenberg, Simple Minds , BAP , Die Fantastischen Vier , H-Blockx and Miles Davis .

Due to the conversion of the premises of the Germania brewery into a new lifestyle quarter, the last event took place on June 4, 2006 in Jovel on Grevener Straße. After Frank Diez and the band Revolution, Steffi Stephan played with friends, including Carl Carlton , Hannes Bauer , Inga Rumpf and Udo Lindenberg . With the dismantling of the non-listed buildings of the former Germania brewery, the Jovel was demolished in November 2006.

However, in order to still be able to organize the traditional Christmas and New Year's Eve party in 2006, the Jovel received a four-week special permit from the city of Münster to rent and use a warehouse in the immediate vicinity of the main fire station II at the harbor between December 8 and 31 . The city of Münster also issued such a permit for 2007. A breakthrough in the almost two-year search for a new location came with the bankruptcy of the Kiffe car dealership in September 2008, the second-oldest Opel dealer to date in Germany. In October 2008, Stephan signed an open-ended lease for the former listed car dealership from the 1930s, which will from now on house the Jovel Music Hall and will continue the old tradition. The new Jovel was opened on November 29, 2008 with a concert by Udo Lindenberg, Inga Rumpf, Julia Neigel , Steffi Stephan and the “ Panikorchester ”. The long-term future, however, depended for a long time on the new, future owners of the property. Steffi Stephan was looking for investors to buy the former car dealership himself. In November 2012, Stephan was able to take over the site and building in a bidding competition.

Since November 2, 2011, almost 50 issues of the “Jovel News”, which appeared between 1989 and 1993, have been included in the digital archive of the University and State Library of Münster .
