Savage Grace is an American speed and power metal band from Los Angeles , California , founded in 1981 under the name Marquis De Sade and disbanded in 1988. The band has been active again since 2009.
history
The band was founded in 1981 under the name Marquis De Sade and consisted of guitarist Chris Logue, bassist Brian East, drummer Dan Finch III and singer Kelly Rhoads, brother of Randy Rhoads who died a year later . In the summer of 1982, the band recorded a first demo under their new name Savage Grace, with Dwight Cliff as the new singer. The song Scepters of Deceit from this demo was heard in the same year on the compilation Metal Massacre II . This was followed by appearances together with Exodus , Abattoir and Armored Saint . At the time, John Birk joined the band as the new vocalist, while Kenny Powell was added as a new guitarist. In 1983 the self-financed EP The Dominatress was released via Metal Blade Records . The band then consisted of bassist Brian East, drummer Dan Finch III, guitarists Chris Logue and Kenny Powell and singer John Birk. After some appearances, among others together with Exodus and Slayer , Birk and Powell left the band again. Birk had only found out about his departure from a radio interview with the band. Powell formed the band Omen in the spring of 1984 . In the early summer of 1984, Mike Smith was presented to replace Birk. On the 1985 debut album Master of Disguise Mark Marshall (ex- Agent Steel ) was represented as the new guitarist, after Kurt Philips briefly played the electric guitar in the band. In autumn 1985 the band played at the Loreley Festival in Germany for the first time , which also included groups like Venom and Metallica . Smith was no longer in the band, which is why guitarist Logue now also took over the vocals. Drummer Finch left the band a little later for health reasons and was replaced by Mark Marcum. In 1986 the second album After the Fall from Grace followed . Then followed a European tour together with Heir Apparent , where Savage Grace swapped bassist with this band, so that Derek Peace came as a new member for Brian East to the band. The performances in Germany were very poorly attended due to the soccer World Cup taking place at the time . After that, the band began work on the third album, which however never came out. Instead, she released the EP Ride into the Night because, according to Logue, there was not enough material for an album. The EP included a cover version of Deep Purples Burn . In 1988 the group broke up. Peace then rejoined Heir Apparent.
In 2009 Logue re-founded the band with a completely different line-up. In 2010 the band played in Athens at The Hammers Festival and the German Keep It True . With this line-up, a new Savage Grace album was planned, but it never came back because Logue left Germany under dubious circumstances during the preparations for an unknown destination. The already written songs then appeared in 2013 under the band name Masters of Disguise with another singer.
style
The band is one of the first representatives of the speed metal sector. On their EP The Dominatress , the band played classic speed metal, which was interspersed with a break. The band continued the classic speed metal style on their debut album Master of Disguise , with the use of double bass being characteristic, before the group became more catchy and melodic on the second album. In Slayer - Fanzine was Master of Disguise as melodic thrash metal called à la omen. On their EP Ride into the Night , the band became even more melodic compared to the previous album.
