Deir el-Gebrawi ( Arabic دير الجبراوي, DMG Dair al-Ǧabrāwī ) is a village in Middle Egypt , about 12 km east of today's city of Manfalut on the east side of the Nile . Deir el-Gebrawi is located in the Markaz Abnūb of the Asyut governorate , the 2006 census counted 3,055 inhabitants.

Deir el-Gebrawi is named for a nearby necropolis from Pharaonic times . The necropolis is spread over two separate rock faces, the "Northern Cliff" and the "Southern Cliff". During the end of the Old Kingdom and perhaps still during the First Intermediate Period , around 120 rock tombs were built here , 16 of which have pictures and inscriptions. Of particular importance are the graves of several princes of the 12th Upper Egyptian Gau , some of whom also held other very high state offices such as that of the vizier or a ruler of Upper Egypt. These tombs include those of Ibi and Djau in the southern group, and those of Henqu I, Hemre I, Henqu II and Hemre II in the northern group.

Research history

The necropolis has been visited by various researchers since the middle of the 19th century, but Norman de Garis Davies made a first detailed description in 1900. Davies focused his work mainly on the southern group of tombs. A detailed documentation of the northern group was only made in 2004 by Naguib Kanawati . Many graves showed a strong deterioration in the state of preservation, which is mainly due to the activity of grave robbers who removed wall decorations in the 1970s.
