Dolphins (Original title: Dolphins ) is an American documentary from 2000.

action

The IMAX film introduces the life of wild dolphins that live off the Bahamas . A group of marine biologists (Kathleen Dudzinski, Dean Bernal and Alejandro Acevedo-Gutiérrez as well as Louis Herman and Bernd Wursig) dives to the animals and shows their way of life. The main focus is on the communication between animals and their intelligence. Their eating habits and their reactions to people are also shown.

background

The world premiere took place on April 14, 2000. The actor Pierce Brosnan is the narrator of the film in the original version.

Reviews

Variety was surprised at the film's ability to elicit exuberant responses, while the intention to provide a deeper insight gave it lasting value. Wesley Morris of the San Francisco Chronicle complained that the film did not address the problems of pollution and fishing. Marjorie Baumgarten from the Austin Chronicle praised the wealth of information in the film, with the underwater camera work being particularly fascinating.

Awards

In 2001 the film was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Documentary Short Film category. There were further nominations for the IDA Award from the International Documentary Association and the Golden Reel from the Motion Picture Sound Editors.

Film screening

In the Technik-Museum Speyer (as of March 2020) the film is still shown with German sound every day at 12 noon in the IMAX Dome cinema. It is the last "real" IMAX cinema with a canvas dome.

DVD (Germany)

The DVD release in Germany took place with the German and the original English audio track. A bonus DVD-ROM contained a 720p release in WMV-HD format that is protected by online DRM . With the company Image Entertainment, however, the license server for this and other IMAX DVDs disappeared so that this version of the film can no longer be played.
