Delta 5 was a short-lived post-punk band from Leeds , England , and was active between 1979 and 1981.

Career

Delta 5's original members Julz Sale ( vocals / guitar ), Ros Allen ( bass ) and Bethan Peters (bass) formed the band "for fun," but they soon became part of the thriving post-punk scene in Leeds. Later Kelvin Knight joined as drummer and Alan Riggs as guitarist . Combining feminism with a bassy funky punk sound (similar to the style of another band from Leeds, Gang of Four ), they released their debut single in 1979, Mind Your Own Business . This song was later renamed Saboten (Kaktus) in Japanese lyrics and was covered by Shonen Knife and released on their debut album Minna Tanoshiku in 1982, as well as by Chicks on Speed , Le Shok , R. Stevie Moore , Pigface and the Dum Dum Girls .

Delta 5 were also active in the Rock Against Racism movement and were victims of a media attack by a right-wing extremist group close to the rival Rock Against Communism movement.

After the release of their second single, You , the band successfully toured the United States and shortly thereafter left the Rough Trade label in favor of Charisma Records . They then recorded their debut album, See the Whirl , which was produced too cleanly and was unsuccessful both economically and in reviews. Due to the failure of the album, the band broke up in 1981. After the band broke up, Bethan Peters played on Fun Boy Three's second album , Waiting .

In 2006, Kill Rock Stars released a compilation of earlier material from Delta 5 under the name Singles & Sessions 1979–1981 , benefiting from the resurgent popularity of post-punk bands like Gang of Four and Wire . This includes a wealth of unpublished material as well as BBC radio recordings and concert recordings .
