Left

The delta retroviruses are a genus within the retrovirus family . They include, for example, the bovine leukemia virus and the primate viruses such as the human pathogenic HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 . Close relatives of HTLV-1 and -2 are the simian ( monkey ) viruses, STLV-1 and STLV-2. The delta retroviruses are passed on from animal to animal and cause T or B cell leukemia. No endogenous retrovirus variants are known of the delta retroviruses .

The delta retroviruses were assigned the rank of a genus in 1998 due to their phylogenetic relationship . They have the accessory genes tax and rex , which overlap.

Systematics

According to ICTV as of November 2018, the genus (genus) Delta virus consists of the following species (species) or subspecies (subspecies), the virus names are taken from the 9th report of ICTV (2011):

  • Genus deltaretrovirus
  • Human T-lymphotropic virus 1 ( English Human T-lymphotropic virus 1, Human T-cell leukemia-lymphoma virus , HTLV-1, first description 1979/1980)
  • Simianes T-lymphotropic virus 1 ( English Simian T-lymphotropic virus 1 , STLV-1)
  • Viruses not previously assigned to any species:
  • Human T-lymphotropic virus 4 (HTLV-4, first description 2005, identical to simian T-lymphotropic virus 4, STLV-4)
  • Simian T-lymphotropic virus 5 (STLV-5, first description 2009)

Remarks:

  • HTLV-3, HTLV-III, as well as LAV or ARV are earlier names of HIV- 1 (genus Lentivirus , disease AIDS ) since the first description in 1983 until the new name was established by the ICTV in 1986. Since 2005, HTLV-3 has been a virus of the Species Primate T-lymphotropic virus 3 of the genus Deltaretrovirus considered here .
  • HTLV-4, HTLV-IV, and LAV-2 are names that were used briefly for HIV-2 (also of the lentivirus genus , AIDS disease) , which was discovered in 1986 . Since 2005, HTLV-4 has also designated a virus of the genus deltaretrovirus considered here (which was not yet assigned to a species until 2018) .
