Demë Ali Pozhari

Demë Ali Pozhari (born April 15, 1905 in Pozhar , Ottoman Empire , today Kosovo , † April 26, 1975 in Istanbul , Turkey ) was a Yugoslav politician and resistance fighter .

Life

Demë Ali Pozhari was born in Pozhar in the municipality of Dečani and grew up in a family of Albanian descent. Between 1941 and 1944 he was a co-founder and member of an Albanian resistance movement which fought against the Serbian-Montenegrin Chetniks . From 1942 to 1944 he acted as mayor of Plavë . From November 1944 to October 1948 he fought as an armed partisan against the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia . He then left the region and campaigned for Kosovo from exile. He died in Istanbul.

Honors

In 2012 he was posthumously awarded the "Order of Freedom" by President Atifete Jahjaga . Today a street is named after him in the municipality of Peć . The ruins in Pozhar in which he and his family lived were placed under temporary cultural protection in 2012.
