Demecolcin is a poisonous alkaloid of the autumn crocus ( Colchicum autumnale ).

Occurrence

The blossom of the autumn crocus contains 1.8% colchicine and demecolcine.

Along with the main alkaloid colchicine, it is the second most common alkaloid of the autumn crocus.

effect

Demecolcine, like colchicine, is a mitosis inhibitor that inhibits the formation of spindle fibers (for a more detailed description, see colchicine ). In contrast to colchicine, demecolcine is about forty times less toxic to humans.
