The documentary accompanies the creation of the European Union 's General Data Protection Regulation . The film accompanies the member of the European Parliament Jan Philipp Albrecht and the then Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship Viviane Reding , who are trying to implement stronger data protection for informational self-determination .

The German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) awarded the rating "particularly valuable": the film is a "highly informative, exciting and instructive documentary on a hot topic that concerns us all" and "a documentary masterpiece". The film service ruled that the “gripping, formally ambitious documentary” reproduced the resolution for a draft data protection law with “admirable clarity and great inner tension”. In addition, he advocates "emphatically for European legislation as a regulator against national egoisms and the dominance of purely functional rationality".
The film was awarded the German Documentary Film Prize in 2017 .
