The Democrats Koalíció ( DK , dt. Democratic Coalition ) is a political party in Hungary that split off from the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP) in 2011 under the leadership of the former Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány . It is socially liberal and pro- European .

history

The Democratic Coalition was founded on October 22nd, 2010 as a group within the Hungarian Socialist Party in Budapest . The group was chaired by the former prime minister and party leader of the MSZP, Ferenc Gyurcsány , who had resigned from his post the previous year, and his deputy was Csaba Molnár . After the defeat of the MSZP in the 2010 parliamentary elections and internal party disputes, Gyurcsány left the MSZP together with nine other members of parliament in October 2011 and founded the Democratic Coalition as an independent party. Molnár took over the leadership of the new parliamentary group. However, following an amendment to Parliament's house rules in 2012, it was not given a group status .

For the parliamentary elections in 2014 , the DK took part in the left-wing electoral alliance " Összefogás 2014 " together with the MSZP, the Magyar Liberális Párt and the group Together 2014 - Dialogue for Hungary . The party provided 13 of the 106 direct candidates and entered the Hungarian parliament with four members.

In the 2014 European elections , the Democratic Coalition won two of the 21 Hungarian mandates in the European Parliament with 9.75% of the vote . The party became the fourth largest force nationwide. The DK received a particularly large number of votes in the big cities; in Budapest, Pécs , Győr and Kaposvár it was before the MSZP. After Gyurcsány renounced his mandate as the top candidate, Csaba Molnár and Péter Niedermüller are the current representatives of the DK in the European Parliament.
