Denardo Ornette Coleman (born April 19, 1956 in Los Angeles ) is an American jazz drummer .

Live and act

The son of the musician Ornette Coleman and the poet Jayne Cortez began playing drums at the age of six. Even as a child he played regularly with his father, who accepted him as a full drummer on his album The Empty Foxhole (with Charlie Haden ) in 1966 . He was also used as a drummer for the albums Ornette at 12 (1968) and Crisis (1969). Afterwards his school education was in the foreground, even if he toured occasionally with his father's band.

Since 1980 he has led the band The Firespitters (which his mother supported in her poetry recitals ) and with whom he recorded five albums. Since 1984 he has played regularly in his father's prime time band, and later also in his father's piano quartet with Geri Allen . He has since acted as its manager and producer and directs the companies it founded, including a recording studio in Harlem . With his band Vibe (which includes Al MacDowell , Tony Falanga , Charles Ellerbe and Antoine Roney ) and guests like Patti Smith , he is currently presenting his father's music.
