Hypericum juniperinum is a plant type from the family of hypericaceae . The species occurs in Venezuela and Colombia . In the departments of Cundinamarca and Boyacá it is called "Chite" and is used to make brooms. But the plant is also used as fuel.

description

Hypericum juniperinum is a shrub that reaches a height of between half a meter and a meter. The trunk is erect and branches out tightly. The leaf blade of the sessile leaves is about 6.3 to ten millimeters long and 0.6-0.8 millimeters wide. The straight or lanceolate, boat-like leaves are twisted and lie close to the stem or are only minimally off the stem. The base is straight and the leaf margin is partially dry and translucent like a membrane. The tip of the leaf is acute-angled . The flowers are tightly packed and resemble grapes . The oval sepals measure 1.6 - 2.4 millimeters in length and 0.8 millimeters in width. Its end is pointed. The oblique petals are between 3.6 and 4.8 millimeters long and 0.8 to 1.2 millimeters wide. The ovary is 1.2 millimeters in size, with the stylus on top measuring less than five millimeters. The scar is head-shaped. The fruits reach sizes between 1.2 and two millimeters. The flowering period extends from May to September, followed by fruit ripening from December to March.

The plant is found in Colombia and Venezuela on well-drained soils.

Botanical history

The species was first described by Karl Sigismund Kunth in 1821 . A publication by Jacques Denys Choisy , 1824 assigned the species as brathys var. Juniperinum to the species Hypericum brathys , which is now only regarded as a synonym.
