Deniz Utlu

Deniz Utlu (* 1983 in Hanover ) is a German writer, essayist and columnist.

life and work

Deniz Utlu studied economics with a focus on philosophy in Paris and Berlin . In 2003 Utlu founded the magazine freitext together with Marianna Salzmann , among others , which he also published until 2014. In 2014 his debut novel Die Unhaltenen ( Graf Verlag ) was published . The novel was adapted by Hakan Savaş Mican for the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin , where Utlu also curates series of events. In addition, Utlu was and is active as a columnist and essayist. Among other things, he contributed to that of Fatma Aydemir andHengameh Yaghoobifarah published volume Your Home Is Our Nightmare (2019) at. His second novel Gegen Morgen ( Suhrkamp Verlag ) was published in 2019 and was shortlisted for the “Text & Language” literary prize . In 2019 Utlu was awarded the State Capital of Hanover's Literature Prize. In 2021 Utlu was awarded the Alfred Döblin Prize . "Utlu opens up a geography of remembrance for German literature that extends from Hanover all the way to Turkey, to the Syrian border," said the jury's statement.
