The sting herring ( Denticeps clupeoides ) is a 15 centimeters long expectant freshwater fish , the West African endemic in Ouémé , in the Niger Delta and in the Mungo River in Cameroon lives. Its home waters have a strong current. The schooling fish is the only species of the Denticipitidae family that is monotypical .

features

The name of the fish is derived from the denticles (skin teeth) on the top of the skull and the underside of the skull. The front half of the skull looks "furry". A supramaxillary, a bone of the upper jaw, is missing. The caudal fin has 16 rays , the gill arch has five rays, the middle ones have denticles on the front edge. The lateral line organ is complete.
