The depot of Groß Schwechten (also hoard find of Groß Schwechten ) is a depot find of the Early Bronze Age Aunjetitz culture from Groß Schwechten , a district of Stendal in the Stendal district ( Saxony-Anhalt ). It dates between 2000 and 1700 BC. Chr.

Find history

The depot was discovered during clearing work in 1861 and handed over to the Altmark Association for Patriotic History and Industry in 1863 . Today the greater part of the objects is in the possession of the Johann Friedrich Danneil Museum in Salzwedel , some pieces belong to the Museum of Prehistory and Early History in Berlin .

composition

When it was found, the hoard was in a ceramic vessel covered with a granite slab . The vessel broke during the rescue; the broken pieces were not picked up, nor was the plate. The contents of the vessel consisted of ten dagger blades , 13 loosely lying rivets and four shaft shoes (originally also erroneously interpreted as rivets). All items are made of bronze . The dagger blades are all different. Their blades have not been sharpened. There are three different types of rivets: movable solid rivets, movable hollow rivets and solid double rivets.

A material analysis by Knut Rassmann showed that the pieces from Groß Schwechten were made of arsenic bronze with an arsenic content of 3.37 percent. They therefore date to a very early phase of bronze production in Central Europe.
