The Johann-Friedrich-Danneil-Museum (short: Danneil-Museum ) is a local museum in Salzwedel in Saxony-Anhalt . It was founded in 1836 and is named after the prehistorian and high school professor Johann Friedrich Danneil (1783–1868).

history

Johann Friedrich Danneil

In 1836 the museum was founded as a collection of the " Altmark Association for Patriotic History and Industry ", in which Danneil played a leading role. The museum was one of the first German association museums. Numerous prehistoric and early historical exhibits from the Altmark formed the basis of the collection . The collection was temporarily stored in the Salzwedel town hall, then in a side chapel of the Marienkirche , then in the district court. In 1865 Wilhelm I and Otto von Bismarck visited the collection.

In 1929 the museum moved to a floor in the Propstei immediately south of the Marienkirche. The museum became a district home museum and was no longer run by the association. It was expanded and reopened under the name Johann Friedrich Danneil Museum on September 28, 1932. The collection also included exhibits from the Middle Ages and later centuries. During the time of National Socialism, the attempt to adapt the museum ideologically failed, for example by highlighting Danneil as the “founder of Germanic prehistory”. The collection remained largely intact during World War II. At the time of the land reform , the museum received numerous other exhibits from private collections of dispossessed and refugees from the GDR . In 1956, the Diesdorf open-air museum , founded in 1911, was taken over by the Danneil Museum, but in 1989 it was spun off again.

building

Originally the house of the Archdeacon von Salzwedel from 1474 stood at this point. Albrecht von der Schulenburg had a mansion built in 1578, including some parts of this provost 's office. It is a half-timbered building from the Renaissance with a stair tower . In 1754 a sandstone portal was added. The building remained extraterritorial until 1806, so it was not part of the city of Salzwedel. In 1928 it was bought by the city.

Collection and events

Longobard workshop in Zethlingen

Today the collection includes over 30,000 inventoried finds from the entire Altmark. This includes exhibits from earlier Altmark museums such as the former Gardelegen local history museum . The most famous exhibits include the “Salzwedeler Madonna”, an oak wood sculpture from 1225/1230, and the “Vineyard Altar” from the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Younger from 1582, with the parable of the workers in the vineyard from the Gospel of Matthew in its middle section points to the Reformation as an allegory . It originally stood in the Salzwedel monks' church . The museum's library contains around 20,000 books and as many periodicals.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, the Johann-Friedrich-Danneil-Museum shows special exhibitions on local history topics, such as “Documents of the Wende ” from 2009–2010 . As part of a museum educational concept, action days are held regularly. The program also includes exhibitions by local artists.

In addition to the museum in the “Propstei”, the Zethlingen Longobard workshop in Zethlingen has been part of the Danneil Museum since 1990. It is located on a cremation cemetery that is around 2000 years old and is attributed to the Lombards and serves as a museum education center. For example, the life of the Lombards is represented there.
