Depending on the situation, both become hobby detectives and investigate on their own.

action

Restorer Willibald Adrian Metzger is on his way to the "Pension Hackenberger" with his bicycle, where he is supposed to restore an antique wooden figure. The guesthouse is very remote and he also has to visit the caretaker who is currently working in the “Sonnenhof” health clinic, which is even higher up in the mountains. On the rather strenuous way there, Willibald falls on his bike and finds a severed ring finger. The young Danjela Djurkovic, who is bathing in a mountain lake up here, happens to be the witness. When Danjela takes a closer look at the ring, curiously, an eagle grabs its finger and disappears with it. Danjela is able to "save" the ring and discovers the engraved name August and a date. During the conversation, Willibald learns that Danjela lives in the "Sonnenhof" and so both of them set off there together. When they finally arrived, they encounter a large police presence because a guest drowned in the pool. Willibald, whom Danjela is very sympathetic to, doesn’t leave her side anymore and has to discover that she has a detective streak and is therefore very interested in the fate of the dead spa guest August Friedmann. She is constantly looking for clues and is convinced that the man must have been murdered. Willibald asks her to inform the police of her suspicion, but they don't seem interested and continue to assume an accident.

After Willibald has contacted the caretaker Ferdinand Anzböck, he makes his way back to the "Pension Hackenberger". On the way he is approached by a driver who offers to take him with him, as he would also live with the Hackenbergs. The bike is loaded onto the transporter and Willibald is grateful not to have to struggle any longer. In the conversation he learns that the young man is August Friedmann's son. His father had been to the spa clinic after falling from the ladder to rehab and he had just picked up his things there.

In the evening Danjela calls Willibald and says that the severed finger might belong to Ms. Friedmann and that there might be a family tragedy here. Although Willibald is busy restoring the wooden figure and actually wants to finish it, he makes an appointment with Danjela for the next day. While they are discussing how to proceed in the health clinic, a newly severed hand is suddenly discovered in the shark tank, which is installed in the entrance area for display purposes, which very likely belonged to the caretaker, the rest of whom the shark has already eaten. Danjela is immediately convinced that the man did not fall into the pool by accident, but that he too was murdered. For Willibald, it's enough for now, and he drives back to continue working on the figure. In the small alpine guesthouse he gets into conversation with Sascha Friedmann and learns that he did not have a good relationship with his father. Overall, his family relationships are very sad, because his grandfather tyrannizes the whole family, which burdens them all. Willibald meets Sascha's mother by chance and realizes that she is neither missing a finger nor the ring on it. According to Sascha's descriptions, not only did he leave the Hirzingerhof, but his older brother Xaver much earlier and now his father too, who had planned to start a new life.

Willibald has let himself be discovered by Danjela's passion for investigations after he accidentally found old photos of Sascha's family. He wants to ask the pastor about it because he should know the family well, but first gets to the communicative Zellmoser. From her he learns that the caretaker Anzböck had worked as a farmhand at the Hirzingerhof when he was young and was in love with his daughter Luise, as was August Friedmann, who later married Luise. Luise's sister Paula was 15 at the time and died unexpectedly of a puzzling illness. While Willibald tries to get an idea of the relationships and family relationships and talks to Danjela over the phone, he is suddenly threatened with a hunting rifle by Sascha's younger brother Benedikt and forced to drive with him. He had seen Willibald with Sascha at his grandfather's farm and wants to know why he is so interested in his family. After a little fuss, the hot-headed Benedict drives on, but still has Willibald's cell phone in his car. When Danjela calls, he takes the call and Danjela chatters cheerfully without knowing that Willibald is not on the line. This is how Benedikt learns that she has found August's third son, who is missing, and who works as a physiotherapist here in the health clinic. Benedikt goes there immediately and wants to confront his brother, whom he assumes - since Xaver works in the clinic where her father has just been killed - that he is also his murderer. For this reason and also because he cannot forgive him then went away and left him alone with the terrible grandfather, he stabbed him with the knife. Benedict is then arrested and Xaver is taken to the hospital .

For Danjela and Willibald, the case is still not resolved. They construct the connections as they have developed in their opinion: At the time, August Friedmann was in love with Luise's sister Paula, who had a child of his at the age of 15 and was banned from court because of the shame. August had to marry Luisa, who raised Paula's child (Xaver) as hers. When Ferdinand Anzböck unexpectedly met his old rival in the health clinic, he drowned him in anger. Since August had arranged to meet Paula to start a new life with her, but then didn't come, she had cut her finger out of grief. She couldn't have known that August was no longer alive at the time. Later, when Danjela wants to check on Xaver, she meets a nun with a bandaged hand in the hospital. Since she turns lovingly to Xaver, Danjela suspects that her theory is correct and that this woman is Paula.

The two hobby detectives initially suspect that Xaver overheard August's murder and that he pushed the caretaker into the shark tank in revenge when he was about to feed the fish. For Willibald, however, this does not seem a sufficient motive. He should be right, because soon he learns the whole terrible truth that August Friedmann revealed in a letter to Sascha. According to this, a big lie ran through her entire family, in which Xaver had to grow up as his aunt's son and Sascha is not August's son either. Luise's father assaulted his own daughter and fathered Sascha. After Willibald has discovered Sascha's secret, he wants to kill him and his grandfather too. He locks her in the barn and sets the building on fire. At the last moment, the two of them are able to free themselves and escape the fire, but the ungrateful Hirzinger is hit by a piece of metal falling from the barn. Sascha also dies because he has an accident in his car while on the run.

Reviews

Volker Bergmeister from Tittelbach.tv wrote: The butcher and the dead man in the shark tank “is indeed a sophisticated crime thriller with an ironic-biting undertone, but the somewhat comedic introduction of the main characters Metzger and his extremely agile 'assistant' Danjela Djurkovic becomes it Case a little watered down. It only gets really dense, exciting and black-humored in the second half. "

At the Süddeutsche Zeitung , David Denk said: “The black, humorous, coarse story based on the novel by Thomas Raab has something exaggerated, fantastic, and has little in common with current TV crime realism. As a film, 'Der Tote im Haifischbecken' is therefore more bulky - but also much more interesting, not to say more Austrian. Danjela's exuberant joie de vivre is contrasted by the weird and shy nature of the butcher, embodied by star comedian Robert Palfrader "

Ursula Scheer from the FAZ said: “Actually, the butcher only dropped his rucksack in the panorama hostel up on the mountain to restore a worm-eaten statue of Nepomuk. The drowned patron of the secret of confession without hands, that is a first hint to all sorts of unspoken things and what is to come. ”The thriller“ is not impressive because of its depth or sophistication, nor is it particularly original. It's about guilt and shame and a messed up clan with three sons. ”“ What exactly is served to you in gloomy family constellations from the mountains can be served in bits and pieces on a snack board and easily nibbled away. The viewer will quickly have forgotten what exactly he was consuming. The only thing that sticks is the idea that Robert Palfrader gives. "" Palfrader makes him [(Willibald Adrian Metzger)] a figure from whom one definitely wanted to learn more. "

The critics of the TV magazine TV Spielfilm gave the best rating (thumbs up) and wrote: A film “with a twisted look. Hobby detectives (Dorka Gryllus, Robert Palfrader) roll up a tricky family drama. - Whimsical! ".
