The moon bear is a 52-part cartoon series based on the books by Rolf Fänger and Ulrike Möltgen , published by Verlag Coppenrath .

The moon bear lives in the forest with many other animals. He got his name from his friends when he brought the moon down from the sky one day because he felt very lonely. But his friends were then able to convince him to let him go back to the night sky. He experiences many adventures with his friends, an old badger, a raven and others.

The series was produced by neue deutsche Filmgesellschaft , Caligari Film , Beta Film, and Universum Film . Participating producers were Frank Piscator, Gisela Schäfer u. a. The broadcasting station was ZDF . The script for the series was written by John Patterson, Mark Slater and Gabriele M. Walther. Mike Maurus was responsible for the direction and Zhijian Xu for animation.

On October 16, 2008, a 71-minute film, which was produced in 2007, was released in German cinemas with the title Der Mondbär - The Great Cinema Adventure . The producers of the film were Rolf Fänger and Ulrike Möltgen. Universum Film was the executive production and distribution company . Mike Maurus and Thomas Bodenstein directed it. This film was released on DVD on March 20, 2009 and the first broadcast on German television was on KiKA on September 15, 2009. Two DVD boxes with the first 44 episodes and several books were released for the series.
In addition, Anna Fänger, the daughter of the late author Rolf Fänger, brought the moon bear to the stage in 2012 as a puppet theater. The approximately 40-minute performance is recommended for children aged three and over and is based on the original texts.
The publisher also sells Mondbär merchandising products such as plush toys, games and clothing.
