The shipowner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The shipowner ( Ocean Trader outside of German-speaking countries) is an economic simulation by Software 2000 from 1995. The player has the task of running a shipping company .

Gameplay

Depending on the level of difficulty, you start with one or two ships in your home port, which you can choose from the cities of Hamburg , London , New York or Sydney . Opportunities to earn money include buying and selling 32 goods in 100 cities, freight deals , commodity futures or of course the sale of ships. In addition, you can set up warehouses, rent them out and speculate on a fictitious stock exchange.

(General cargo) cargo ships , refrigerated ships , bulk cargo ships , container ships , tankers and - if you have the necessary change - passenger ships are available as types of ship for transport . The cargo ships are also divided into coastal cargo ships, normal and large cargo ships, the tankers into normal and giant tankers. So there are nine types of ships within the game. When purchasing a ship of any of these types, the player can have a standard ship built, buy a used ship or have a completely individual ship planned and then give this plan to the shipyard. There are lower and upper limits for the values of speed, capacity or range for each type of ship.

The game can be played either with up to four human players or against up to three computer-controlled shipping companies. As a type of game, the endless game, a game over a certain length of time or the achievement of a certain game goal are possible. The setting of the level of difficulty is divided into various factors such as: B. Profit margin in trading or lack of time in futures.

Similar games

The shipowner is similar to the popular games at the time of publication The Patrician and Ports of Call . In principle, The Shipowner is a mixture of Ports of Call and a The Patrician of Modern Times.

criticism

The Amiga Joker awarded the game an award for particularly good games. The editor described the game as a “milestone” and one of the “best business simulations” of the time. The magazine justifies the evaluation, among other things, with a perfect “mixture of realism, complexity and comfort”. However, a “Hanseatic cool modesty prevails” in the graphics.

The website Home of the Underdogs awarded the "Top Dog" award and wrote: "Although Ocean Trader doesn't come close to the level of realism found in Capitalism Plus, it is a very enjoyable, 'light' business game". (For example: "Although Ocean Trader does not come close to the realism of a Capitalism Plus , it is a very entertaining ' light ' economic simulation.") Overall, it is a great game and a good alternative to simpler shipping company simulations such as Ports of Call .
