The Umbrella with the Swan is a German silent film from 1916 with Henny Porten in the lead role.
action
Henny Porten plays the rich widow Gisela Bark from America, who is currently in Germany. When she comes back from the manicure, Mrs. Bark realizes that she has forgotten her beloved umbrella with the distinctive swan handle. Count zu Bretz, who visits the manicure after her, discovers the good piece and decides to personally bring her umbrella to the American woman.
Count Bretz drives over to Mrs. Bark, sees her working in the kitchen and believes that it must be a domestic servant. He introduces himself as the chauffeur Fritz Neumann, she as the kitchen helper Betty Schulz. Thereupon he hands her the umbrella with the request to pass it on to the madam. You get along very well quickly and arrange a rendezvous. All sorts of confusions arise before they both reveal their true identity and finally become engaged.
Production notes
The umbrella with the swan was created in the winter of 1915/16 in the Messter-Film-Atelier, Blücherstraße 32 and had the subtitle The story of a stopped umbrella . When it was re-censored on June 3, 1921, the film had three acts with a length of 1160 meters. A youth ban was issued. The premiere took place on April 6 or 9, 1916 in the Berlin Mozart Hall. In Vienna, the film ran a few weeks later with a length of only around 900 meters.
