The Protection of the Wings (in Switzerland: Charachar - The Bird Catcher ; Original: চরাচর , carācar ) is an Indian drama by Buddhadeb Dasgupta from 1993. It was based on a story by the East Bengal author Prafulla Roy .

action

The film is set in the east of Bengal . Lakhinder makes a living for himself and his family as a bird catcher. With his partner Bhushan he catches forest birds and sells them to a bird dealer. His thoughts often wander back to his deceased son, who once buried a dead bird - in the hope that it would grow into a "bird tree" - and died the following day. To Bhushan's annoyance, Lakhinder often starts philosophizing. He develops a sentimentality towards the birds and enjoys the feeling of secretly releasing the captives.

His wife is appalled by the behavior, since it is practically reducing the already low household income. He has also become estranged from his wife on an emotional level. This is why she has taken the middleman Natabar as her lover when Lakhinder is out of the house. Lakhinder learns about this from Bhushan.

Bhushan and Lakhinder learn that in Kolkata , where their birds are ultimately sold in the market as pets, the price is much higher. You make your way into town and go to the wholesaler Kalicharan. He invites her to a ceremony. But when Lakhinder learns that the meat he has been served is poultry, he just runs away. Bhushan cannot believe his behavior, but his daughter Gauri is very impressed with Lakhinder. She offers him to marry her, as Lakhinder's wife has now moved to the wealthier Natabar.

Lakhinder manages to get his wife back after a scuffle with Natabar. However, after he has given all the captured birds back their freedom in the night, they leave him for good.

The birds come to his hut from now on. He is happy and in tune with them.

Awards

Charachar also ran in the competition at the 1994 Berlinale and at the International Film Festival of India .

Reviews

At the end of this lyrical film with outstanding panoramic shots and tracking shots , he [Lakhinder] is rescued by the birds when they - in an ironic reversal of the final scene of Hitchcock's The Birds  - come into his hut and offer him their protection.
