action

The Berlin photo reporter Georg Bastian is celebrating his thirtieth birthday with friends and colleagues. At an advanced hour the last guests leave and since Georg still feels like partying, he simply joins them. On the way, however, he is left alone and sees "Miss Albena", wearing only a little rhinestones , performing a rubber act in a restaurant . But here he is kicked out by the staff with the reference to a closed event.

Fascinated by the woman, he tries to convince his boss of the need to report on her. He photographs her over several years, stylizes her into a dream woman and begins to lose himself in his dreams. In his fantasy he experiences adventures with her, but in private she doesn't want to know anything about him. Georg is quickly brought back to reality, but he refuses. The request to the editors to accompany them to a guest performance in Amsterdam is refused by his boss. However, thanks to his stubbornness, his newspaper prints a multi-page article about "Miss Albena". But the subject does not end there; he continues to pursue it. As a replacement for the unauthorized trip to the Netherlands, he should get an assignment in Nicaragua. While he was sleeping with the editorial secretary, Miss Schneider, he learned from her that a colleague had received this assignment.

In the circus, where he meets "Miss Albena" again, he sees that she is with a trapeze artist . Georg's jealousy knows no bounds and he begins a fight that is only ended at the request of his loved one. When Georg wants to visit her at home again, he only sees her being driven to a hospital in the ambulance. He drives behind in a taxi and discovers that she is on her way to the delivery. He wants to photograph her, is expelled from the ward and photographs several pregnant women with their bare bellies in front of the hospital.

A short time later, in November 1989, Georg stands at the now open border and distributes his entire photo archive, his life's work, to the people streaming into the West.

production

The scenario comes from Carmen Blazejewski and Tamara Trampe was responsible for the dramaturgy .

The inspiration for the film was an article in the GDR weekly newspaper “Sonntag” about the rubber artist “Miss Albena” from 1985.

The Strass was the DEFA Studio (Artistic group "Berlin") for feature films (Potsdam-Babelsberg) and the DEFA Studio Babelsberg GmbH (Potsdam-Babelsberg) in Orwo turned -Color and had on 9 February 1991 at Berlin's Babylon Cinema Premiere .

criticism

Günter Sobe writes in the Berliner Zeitung that what could be called a story cannot actually be found. This first film by the director is a collage-like attempt to edit the appearance of the GDR. Sometimes it seems a little exaggerated, sometimes a bit satirical, sometimes apt, sometimes imprecise, sometimes tasteless. Michael Hanisch thinks in the Neue Zeit that many episodes give viewers aha-moments that are already historically memorable. For a feature film of 90 minutes in length, one expects a little more. At least one story. The lexicon of international films wrote that this is a first film in which private and professional dreams in the former GDR do not stand up to reality. At first effective and promising in the connection of the historical connection with the cinematic fable, it becomes more and more gimmicky and gets lost in arts and crafts illustrations. Nevertheless, it is an interesting testimony to the upheaval.
