action

The bank teller August Schiller lives and works in Milwaukee. He is happily married and has six children. Schiller is commissioned to bring Pfandbriefe to Chicago. It's the first time he has left Milwaukee since his honeymoon.

By chance he meets the adventurous Mayme on the train. She seduces him and steals the Pfandbriefe after getting him drunk. Mayme's friend Tough and his men hit Schiller in order to steal his watch as well. But the now sober and very angry cashier begins to fight back. During the scuffle, Tough leans out of the train and is killed by an oncoming train. Schiller exchanges his clothes with the dead man. Now the newspapers bring the news of the robbery and the heroic death of the cashier who wanted to protect the loot from the criminals.

Years later, Schiller has become a broken man. He learns that his eldest son has become a well-known violinist. Schiller scrapes up all of his cash so that he can buy a seat at the next concert. After the concert, it is Christmas, Schiller follows his son home. The former cashier is noticed. But the family does not recognize him.
