The Blind Watchmaker is a 1987 British television documentary by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins .

content

Dawkins explains and argues for Charles Darwin's theory of evolution through the process of natural selection .

The film is based on Dawkins' own book of the same title . The title alludes to the watchmaker analogy . This analogy is a teleological argument that was put forward in this form by the theologian William Paley , among others . Today it is led by representatives of creationism and the pseudoscience of intelligent design .

The watchmaker analogy states that a pocket watch found in the field is recognized as an intelligently constructed object and that consequently living organisms are also to be viewed as the works of an intelligent designer / creator / constructor. On the other hand, argues how the modern forms of life slowly emerged through evolution. He explains the random mutation and subsequent selection with the example program (the Weasel Program ) and the computer program The Blind Watchmaker is also available, which simulates the process of natural selection.

Dawkins also visits the southern United States to document a particularly absurd example of creationists' attempts to deceive: the fake human footprints of Paluxy . This was a particularly crude attempt by creationists to prove that humans and dinosaurs lived on earth at the same time. Dawkins also explains how the evolutionary principle, the constant improvement of apparatus, is used by leading German companies ( Krauss-Maffei , Siemens or Audi ).
