Derek Barber, Baron Barber of Tewkesbury

Derek Coates Barber, Baron Barber of Tewkesbury Kt ( June 17, 1918 - November 21, 2017 ) was a British civil servant , agronomist , politician and life peer .

life and career

Barber was born in 1918 to Thomas Smith-Barber († 1967) and Elsie Agnes Coates († 1967) and attended the Royal Agricultural College . He served in World War II and was wounded during that time. He worked as a farmer in Gloucestershire before holding various positions at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food from 1946 to 1972 . Since then he has taken on various agricultural consulting assignments , including for the government and the BBC .

Barber was from 1948 to 1952 a member of the " Cheltenham Rural District Council". In 1969 he was a founding member of the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group. From 1972 to 1993 he worked as an environmental consultant ( Environment Consultant active) in "Humberts Chartered Surveyors". From 1974 to 1980 he was chairman of the BBC's Central Agricultural Advisory Committee . From 1974 to 1989 he was a consultant at "Humberts Landplan". When "Countryside Committee" He was 1981-1991 Chairman ( Chairman ). In this function, he was represented at public events, especially the opening of several landscape parks , and carried out the official inauguration.

From 1990 to 1996 Barber Chair (was chairman ) of the "Booker plc Countryside Advisory Board". From 1982 to 2005 he was President of the Gloucestershire Naturalists Society. From 1990 to 1991 he was President of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), having been Chairman from 1976 to 1981 and Vice-President from 1982 to 1998. He was also President of the Royal Agricultural Society of England from 1991 to 1992 . From 1992 to 1996 he was President of The Hawk and Owl Trust and from 1995 to 1997 of the British Pig Association. At the "Ornithology Society of Middle East" he was from 1987 to 1997 Vice-President ( Vice-President ).

In the mid-1980s he was involved in founding the UK Center for Economic and Environmental Development (UK CEED).

From 1985 to 1988 he was a member of the Advisory Committee Center for Agricultural Strategy. From 1987 to 1989 he was a member of the board of directors ( Council ) of the "British Trust for Ornithology" and from 1987 to 1993 the board of directors of the "Rare Breeds Survival Trust". There he was president from 1991 to 1995 and again from 1997 to 1999. From 1991 to 1995 he was chairman ( chairman ) of the "New National Forest Advisory Board" and Deputy Chairman ( Deputy Chairman ) of "The Ground Work Foundation". From 1983 to 1999 he was a member of the Supervisory Board ( Board ) of the "Center for Economic and Environmental Development".

Since 1990 he was a patron ( saint ) of the "Pendle Heritage Trust". From 1984 to 1991 he was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Farming and Wildlife Trust. He was Vice-President of the "Nature in Art Trust".

Barber was also the author of several books. In November 2006, he wrote the foreword to An UnOrdinary Life , the memoirs of the farmer and journalist Anthony Rosen .

Membership in the House of Lords

He was promoted to Life Peer on August 12, 1992 as Baron Barber of Tewkesbury , of Gotherington in the County of Gloucestershire, and has since been a Crossbencher member of the House of Lords . On April 14, 1993, he gave his inaugural address.

He listed agriculture, forestry and environmental protection as topics of political interest on Parliament's website . He last spoke up on October 15, 1996 on the subject of EU enlargement . He last took part in a vote on November 5, 2002. On March 25, 2016, he retired under the rules of the House of Lords Reform Act 2014 and left the House of Lords.

Barber was married twice. His first marriage was divorced in 1981. Barber was married to Rosemary Jennifer Brougham Pearson since 1983, his second marriage.

Honors

Barber has received several honors. In 1939 he received the John Haygarth Gold Medal in Agriculture. In 1969 he was awarded the Bledisloe Gold Medal for Landowners. In 1977 he was awarded the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal. In 1983 he was awarded the Gold Medal for Services to Wildlife Conservation of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds .

Barber was knighted as a Knight Bachelor in 1984 . In 1989 he received the Massey-Ferguson Agriculture Award . Two years later, in 1991, he was awarded the Gold Medal for Distinguished Service to Agriculture.

The University of Bradford awarded him an honorary doctorate of Science (Hon DSc) in 1986 . In the same year he became an Honorary Fellow of the "Agricultural Society of England" (Hon FRASE). In 1992 he became a “Fellow at the Institute of Agricultural Management” (FIAgr.M.).
