Derek Bok
Derek Curtis Bok (born March 22, 1930 in Bryn Mawr , Pennsylvania) is an American lawyer , educator , author , and university professor . Previously, he was President of Harvard University from 1971 to 1991 and its interim president from July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007.
Bok studied at Stanford University ( BA ) until 1951, at Harvard Law School ( LL.B. ) until 1954 and at George Washington University ( AM ) until 1958 . From 1958 to 1971 he was a professor at Harvard University, where he was dean from 1968 to 1971 and university president from 1971 to 1991 . On July 1, 2006 he took this office again and was interim president of Harvard University until June 30, 2007. He is succeeded by Drew Gilpin Faust .
In 1969, Bok was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Since 1980 he has been an elected member of the American Philosophical Society .
Bok's daughter, Hilary Bok , is a professor of philosophy at Johns Hopkins University .
