Neil Leon Rudenstine

Neil L. Rudenstine (* 21st January 1935 in Danbury , Connecticut ) is an American Anglist , literary scholar , educator and university professors , among others 1991-2001 president of Harvard University was.

Life

After attending the Wooster School Rudenstine began studying at Princeton University , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1956 . Subsequent further studies at the New College of the University of Oxford he completed with the support of a Rhodes scholarship with a further BA as well as a Master of Arts (MA). After returning to the United States, he continued his postgraduate studies and in 1964 earned a Doctor of Philosophy ( Ph.D. ) in English literature from Harvard University.

He then took over a professorship for English studies at Harvard University in 1964 , before he was professor for English studies at Princeton University between 1968 and 1988. There he was dean for student affairs from 1968 to 1972 and then dean of the Faculty of English and most recently from 1977 to 1988 provost of Princeton University. He then served from 1988 to 1991 Executive Vice-President of the Andrew W. Mellon - Foundation .

In 1991 Rudenstine, who was also a trustee of Princeton University and the Courtauld Institute of Art , succeeded Derek Bok as President of Harvard University . He held this position until he was replaced by Lawrence Summers in 2001.

Rudenstine, who was also the director of the American Council on Education and the New York Public Library , was also chairman of the arts of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and a trustee of the Barnes Foundation , the Goldman Sachs Foundation, and has been a trustee of J. Paul since 2007 Getty Trust .

He is also involved in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (elected member since 1991), the American Philosophical Society , the Council on Foreign Relations and the Committee for Economic Development.
