Nathan M. Pusey

Nathan Marsh Pusey (born April 4, 1907 in Council Bluffs , Iowa , † November 14, 2001 in New York City ) was an American educator and university professor who was President of Lawrence College from 1944 to 1953 and also from 1953 to 1971 Was President of Harvard University .

Life

After attending school, Pusey began studying at Harvard University , where he first earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1928 and a Master of Arts (MA) in 1932 . In 1937 he finally completed his postgraduate studies at Harvard University with a Doctor of Philosophy ( Ph.D. ). After a subsequent activity as a teacher at Scripps College in Claremont , he took a professorship at Wesleyan University .

In 1944, Pusey became President of Lawrence College and held that position for nine years until he was replaced by Douglas M. Knight in 1953. He himself then succeeded James Bryant Conant as President of Harvard University and held this position for 18 years until 1971. He was succeeded by Derek Bok , who was previously dean of Harvard Law School. In 1954, Pusey was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Last Pusey was from 1971 to 1975 president of the Andrew W. Mellon - Foundation .
