The Descartes-Gymnasium is a grammar school in Neuburg an der Donau with a scientific-technological and modern language course.

history

It was founded in the 16th century as a Latin school . In December 1616 the Jesuits took over the management of the newly founded school "Ducale Gymnasium Societatis Jesu Neoburgense", which consisted of a seminar (student dormitory) and the school. In 1773, after the dissolution of the order, the Neuburg Jesuits had to hand over the management of the college and the institution to the Benedictines and later to the Augustinians . In 1803 the management of the school was transferred to secular clergy.

In 1965 the school was named "Descartes-Gymnasium" after René Descartes . Descartes was in Neuburg an der Donau on the night of November 10th to 11th, 1619. This replaced the designation of grammar school with upper secondary school . From 1968 to 1970 the first new and extension was built, the second new and extension was built from 1993 to 1996. The side wing of the seminar was converted into classrooms, art halls and a large conference hall in 2007/2008. In 2008, 1,364 students were registered at the grammar school.

In the 2016/2017 school year, the Descartes Gymnasium celebrated its 400th anniversary.

In 2020, 974 students attended the school.
