Designaustria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

designaustria (DA) is an Austrian organization and professional association. Founded in 1927, it is the oldest agency for design in Austria. In Europe, designaustria is the third oldest design organization after the Finnish Ornamo Association (1911) and the German BDG (1919). Its members practice all forms of design, from graphic design, communication design, typography, interaction design, product design, exhibition design, service design to design research and illustration.

The aim is quality assurance, awareness-raising, professionalization and the standard for professional ethics and practice in the design industry. The association offers knowledge transfer and representation of interests for its members. There are currently more than 1300 members organized in various branches and expert clusters.

history

The association was founded in 1927 as the " Association of Austrian Commercial Graphics - BÖG" . At that time, applied graphics began to emerge as »commercial graphics« from free art as a separate discipline. The international consolidation of the term »graphic design« as a term for creative design in this area led to the renaming in 1985 to Graphic Design Austria - GDA and in 1992 to be able to represent the interests of the designer profession comprehensively to designaustria - DA.

Since it was founded, there have been creative designers such as Joseph Binder , Herbert Bayer , Margit Doppler-Kováts, Otto Exinger, Hans Fabigan, FA Porsche , Hanns Wagula and illustrators such as Alfred Kubin and typographers such as Rudolf von Larisch and Herta von Larisch (née Ramsauer) to the members. Today, designers like Stefan Sagmeister , Cordula Alessandri and Henry Steiner continue this tradition. The history of the association was dealt with in the volumes of the series »Design in Austria«:

  • Volume 1: Christian Maryška: "The Art of Advertising - The History of the Association of Austrian Commercial Graphic Artists from the Beginnings to the Re-establishment 1926–1946"
  • Volume 2: Anita Kern: »Austrian Graphic Design in the 20th Century«
  • Volume 3: Heidelinde Resch: "14 graphic artists in 20th century Vienna"
