Fons Hickmann (* 1966 in Hamm ) is a German graphic designer , typographer, author and professor at the Berlin University of the Arts .

Life

Hickmann studied photography and communication design at Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences , aesthetics and media theory in Wuppertal . The design studio Fons Hickmann m23 in Berlin focuses on the development of complex communication systems, corporate design , book , poster , magazine and web design .

In 2001 Fons Hickmann m23 won the competition for the corporate design of the Kieler Woche . His work was represented at all international design biennials . Hickmann was a full professor at the University of Applied Arts Vienna until the end of 2007 , before taking over the chair for graphic design / communication design in the design faculty at the University of the Arts in Berlin from the 2007 summer semester . He previously taught at the Universities of Essen and Dortmund . He is a member of the Type Directors Club New York, the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) and the Art Directors Club of Germany (ADC). The interdisciplinary design laboratory Bremerhaven appointed Hickmann to the board from 2006 to 2012. From 2012 to 2014 he was a member of the jury of the " Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany ". From 2020 juror for the Saxon State Prize for Design . He has been President of the 100 Best Posters Association since 2018 .

The campaign “ 11 Designers for Germany ”, initiated together with ten other German designers, had a lot of media coverage and brought awareness of graphic design to the public and prevented the embarrassing logo of the 2006 soccer World Cup in Germany. His football expertise accumulated in the publication of the publication "The best game of all time - a minute record of 100 years of football history."

Fons Hickmann and his studio were invited to exhibit at the opening of the world's first graphic design museum "Graphic Design Museum" in Breda. The exhibition ”European Championship of Graphic Design” was opened on June 11th, 2008 by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands .

The Berlin studio Fons Hickmann m23 received over 200 awards a. a. Golden Bee Award Moscow, iF Award in gold, ADC Award from Germany, Europe and the USA, LeadAward in gold, the Joseph Binder Award in gold, silver and bronze. In 2012 the Trnava Triennial honored Fons Hickmann for his complete work with the Master's Eye Award .

Fons Hickmann is increasingly devoting himself to the publication of specialist literature on a wide variety of fields of knowledge, from photography and media theory to football and pop cultural phenomena.
