Joseph Binder (born March 3, 1898 in Vienna , † June 25, 1972 in Vienna) was an Austrian graphic designer .

From 1922 to 1926 Joseph Binder studied painting at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna under Berthold Löffler . In 1921, parallel to his training, together with Elisabeth (Lilly) Auböck, Adolf Streit and Friedrich Tauber, he founded the ESBETA graphic studio named after the founding members , which he continued to run in 1924 as the Joseph Binder - Wiener Graphik studio .

With orders from Meinl , Persil , Arabia Kaffee and with tourist posters, Binder established himself as one of the leading commercial graphic artists in Austria. He moved to the United States in the late 1930s. In 1934 he taught in the USA and published his book Color in Advertising . After his final emigration in 1938, he set up a new studio in New York. In 1938 he won first prize in the poster competition for the "New York World's Fair". One of his most important clients was the US Navy, which hired him as art director in 1948 and for whom he remained active until 1963.

Joseph Binder and Frank Lloyd Wright (“greatest architect of all time”) were announced as guest of honor and “leader in graphic contemporary design” at a gala night at the “Art Directors Club Chicago” in 1948. In 1963, Binder ended his career as a graphic designer and from now on devoted himself to so-called "free art".

Joseph Binder Award

The Joseph Binder Award has been announced annually by designaustria in Austria since 1996 . In this international design competition, prizes and awards are given in two categories: the design areas graphic design & illustration (2D) in an independent competition and interior design (3D) as a category within the framework of the Adolf Loos State Prize Design in the area of ​​product design.
