Desulfarculus baarsii is a species of bacteria obtained by the reduction of sulfate to hydrogen sulfide generates energy for metabolism. The genome is completely sequenced.
features
Desulfarculus baarsii is strictly anaerobic and widespread in freshwater, but is also found in seawater. It is vibrion-shaped and flexible. The grief test is negative.
Desulfarculus baarsii is chemoorganotrophic and reduces sulfate, sulfite or thiosulfate to hydrogen sulfide. Formic acid , acetate and fatty acids with up to 18 carbon atoms can serve as electron donors and carbon sources .
Systematics
Desulfarculus baarsii is the only species in the genus and belongs to the Desulfarculaceae family, which in turn is the only family of the Desulfarcales order.
