The Desulfuromonadaceae are a family of bacteria. They use elemental sulfur (S 0 ) and gain energy through reduction , which is converted into the further metabolism (sulfur breathers).

properties

The cells of the Desulfuromonadaceae are rod-shaped or curved. All species are anaerobic and do not tolerate oxygen . Most species are motile through a flagellum . Desulfuromonadaceae occur in brackish water, fresh water and in the sea and belong to the Proteobacteria , as typical for this group, the Gram test is negative.

metabolism

All types of Desulfuromonadaceae belong to the group of sulfur breathers who gain energy by reducing sulfur. Simple organic compounds such as acetate serve as electron donors in energy metabolism and as sources of building materials. Elemental sulfur serves as an electron acceptor . The oxidation of the organic compounds brings electrons into an electron transport chain . A proton motor force is generated, which ultimately leads to the formation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). As an electron acceptor, sulfur takes up the electrons again and is reduced to hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S). Fumarate , pyruvate and malate are other organic substances that can be used as electron donors for various types. Due to the reduction of sulfur to hydrogen sulfide, the bacteria are important in the earth's sulfur cycle .

Systematics

The Desulfuromonadaceae are assigned to the order Desulfuromonadales and contain the following genera :
