Detlef Jahn

Detlef Günter Jahn (born April 5, 1956 in Duisburg ) is a German political scientist and has held the Chair of Comparative Government Studies at the University of Greifswald since 1999 .

Life

After studying political science, sociology and history at the universities of Duisburg , Bielefeld and Edinburgh (Scotland) , Jahn received his doctorate in 1991 with a DAAD scholarship at the European University Institute in Florence on the subject of "New Politics in Trade Unions".

In 1993 he became a research assistant at the University of Paderborn , where he also completed his habilitation in 1998 on the subject of "The institutionalization of ecological standpoints in modern societies" . In the same year he was offered a C4 professorship for Comparative Government Studies at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald. Before that he was visiting scholar at the University of Gothenburg from 1993 to 1996 (with a habilitation grant from the DFG) and from 1996 to 1998 research professor at Nottingham Trent University.

Detlef Jahn researched and taught at the University of Gothenburg , Nottingham Trent University , Åbo Akademi (Finland), New York University , University of California Los Angeles and Irvine, as well as at the Australian National University and Lincoln University in New Zealand.

Jahn wrote basic introductory works in comparative political science (2006; second edition 2013) and political science (2009; together with Bernauer, Kuhn and Walter; third edition 2015). The results of his research on the environmental policy of the OECD countries, the political and economic performance in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the political process in modern democracies and the influence of globalization on state activity are published in national and international journals such as the European Journal of Political Research, West European Politics, International Organization, Journal of Public Policy published.

Together with Prof. Lyle Scruggs (University of Connecticut) and Kati Kuitto , he has compiled a data set on welfare state compensation payments and made it available to the public under Comparative Welfare Entitlements Dataset (CWED2). Further data sets on the positioning and coherence of political parties and governments, as well as on veto players can be found on the chair's homepage.

From April 2002 to October 2009 Jahn was the spokesman for the DVPW section "Comparative Political Science". Since 2008 he has been a board member of the Sustainable Government Indicator of the Bertelsmann Foundation . Since October 2012 he has been a permanent fellow of the Kolleg research group "The Transformative Power of Europe" at Freie Universität Berlin.
