The German Alliance for Climate Change and Health (KLUG) is a network of individuals, organizations and associations from the health sector that has existed since 2017, which draws attention to the consequences of global warming for health and political and social changes in the sense of a rapid transformation wants to initiate a climate-neutral society. Important foundation is the concept of the Planetary Health ( Planetary Health ).

Since 2019 KLUG has been a non-profit registered association based in Berlin .

history

KLUG was founded in 2017 by a group of individuals from the health sector, supported by the Health and Environment Alliance and inspired by similar initiatives in Anglo-Saxon countries such as B. the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change , the US Climate and Health Alliance , the Climate and Health Alliance Australia and the Global Climate and Health Alliance . One of the founding members was Sabine Gabrysch , who has held the first professorship for climate change and health ( Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research / Charité Berlin ) since 2019 .

In May 2018, the Ecological-Social Market Economy Forum temporarily took over legal ownership , and the association was founded in spring 2019.

Fields of action

The focus of KLUG's work is on the following fields of action:

  • Education and agenda setting : Educating health professionals about the health consequences of climate change and making them aware of the responsibility of the health professionals to convey the urgency of action to politicians, patients and the general public.
  • Education : Integration of research results on the health consequences of climate change in basic, advanced and advanced training for the health professions.
  • Climate- neutral health sector (e.g. zero-emission hospital)
  • Lifestyle changes (e.g., less motorized exercise, plant-based diet)

activities

Since the alliance was founded, members of KLUG have been involved in numerous lectures, events and publications, and in exchange with various stakeholders (e.g. science, professional associations). In addition, KLUG has been organizing regular online seminars since spring 2020.

From April 2019 to the end of 2020, KLUG will carry out the educational project Climate Change and Health: Education for Transformative Action, funded by the Federal Environment Agency and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety . The aim is to anchor the topic of climate change in the curricula of health professions in Germany (e.g. medical studies ).

In September 2019, KLUG - inspired by the Fridays for Future movement and the Scientists for Future - launched the Health for Future initiative to create an action forum for members of the health sector, but also for patients. A call for action was signed by over 2,600 people. As a result, around 40 local groups formed, which among other things organized vigils and climate strikes .

The Planetary Health Academy , organized by KLUG, took place from May to July 2020 - an online series of lectures on the connections between human and planetary health with practical suggestions for implementation in everyday professional life (e.g. working with patients). In addition, existing initiatives were presented with the aim of networking the participants (e.g. in Health for Future groups) in order to initiate political activities. The speakers included Sabine Gabrysch, Hanns-Christian Gunga , Claudia Kemfert , Harald Lesch , Dirk Messner , Luisa Neubauer , Stefan Rahmstorf , Johan Rockström , Johannes Vogel , and Eckart von Hirschhausen . The series of events has been certified as advanced medical training by the Berlin Medical Association and the Austrian Medical Association .

advancement

KLUG is funded by the Mercator Foundation , the European Climate Foundation , and (as project funding) by the Federal Environment Agency and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.
