The German Cultural Center Timișoara ( Romanian Centrul Cultural German Timișoara ) is a cultural institution on Strada Augustin Pacha number 2, in the 1st district of Cetate in the western Romanian city ​​of Timișoara . In January 2001 the Romanian-German Cultural Society was founded by 17 public figures with the aim of creating a German cultural center for Timisoara and the surrounding area. The chairman of the cultural society is Elke Sabiel , the former director of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Romania, while the cultural center itself is managed by Alina Baciu .

There were difficulties when the Robert Bosch Foundation withdrew as the main sponsor and the cultural centers from Romania had to become financially independent. Language course departments have since been expanded, thus ensuring the cultural centers a regular income. In addition, cultural programs are offered that convey a current image of Germany. In addition to Timisoara, there are German cultural centers in Cluj-Napoca , Kronstadt , Sibiu and Iași .

The tasks of the cultural society and the cultural center are to promote the German language, convey a current image of Germany and promote German-Romanian cultural relations through exhibitions , readings , concerts and literature . The team has made it their goal to open up new paths and promote contacts between people from Germany and Romania, but also in Timisoara and the Banat.

The cultural center cooperates locally, nationally and internationally with various partners, German and Romanian cultural and educational institutions, other European cultural centers, municipal and regional institutions, galleries , foundations and various non-governmental organizations as well as international partner organizations.

The German Cultural Center is divided into the language, library and cultural work departments. The focus is on the language department with 600 students annually. The language department of the German Cultural Center offers language courses of various levels of difficulty as well as the opportunity to take language tests with a certificate at the Goethe-Institut Bucharest . The language department ensures the cultural center a certain financial independence through a regular income.

The library offers a current selection of books , magazines and audiovisual media in German in a wide range of subject areas, such as culture, arts, history, geography, philosophy, German language, German-language literature with a focus on the 20th and 21st centuries, society and Economy. In addition to an extensive repertoire of books, the children's and youth library also offers a range of board games . The teaching material center is a department of the library that is specially tailored to meet educational needs. It has a large selection of literature on the methodology and didactics of German teaching , text books, textbooks and videos for teaching purposes that were developed by the Goethe-Institut. A reading corner and a PC workstation with internet access are available.

In addition to organizing its own projects, the cultural department also participates in larger events in Timisoara. It organizes exhibitions, concerts, readings by German or German-speaking authors, film and theater performances, seminars and lectures, as well as workshops for schoolchildren and students. The events are usually bilingual and take place in the cultural center and outside of it. The German Cultural Center regularly participates in the organization of major cultural events in Timisoara, such as festivals, exhibitions and concerts.
