Dialog im Dunkeln is a social franchise product from Dialogue Social Enterprise GmbH (DSE), alongside Dialogue in Silence and Dialogue with Time, and was originally conceived by Andreas Heinecke .

With the aim of bringing sighted people closer to the everyday life of people with blindness and enabling them to meet at eye level, the exhibition has been shown in over 30 countries and more than 130 cities since it was founded in 1988 and has now more than 9 million Reached visitors. The exhibitions also created around 9,000 job opportunities for the blind and visually impaired.

Blind people lead groups of visitors through the completely darkened exhibition. Here they experience recreated everyday situations, such as a park, an urban landscape or a bar, with scents, wind, temperatures, tones and textures. The conception includes a role reversal, in that blind people guarantee the orientation of the visitors and they are removed from their usual perception routines.

history

During his work as a journalist for the Südwestfunk should Andreas Heinecke a back-to-work training develop a blind colleague. Disability and being blind were foreign to him until then, but the collaboration with his blind colleague brought him to a new concept in 1988: "What happens when you turn off the light, completely darken a room and meet blind and sighted people with you invites reversed roles? "

The first experiments in the dark followed and in 1989 the first dialogue in the dark was opened in Frankfurt. After further exhibition experiments in Europe with increasing success, the first permanent exhibition Dialog in the Dark was opened in Hamburg in 2000 .
