The Diaz tip (also Dias tip , officially English Diaz Point ) is a spur of the Lüderitz peninsula , which is located near the city of Lüderitz in Namibia . The Angra tip , located around 500 meters further east across the Sturmvogelbucht , also on the Lüderitz peninsula, borders directly on the Lüderitzbucht . The Diaz peak protrudes around 50 m into the South Atlantic .

A copy of the original cross made by Bartolomeu Dias in 1921 can be viewed , a cross column that he erected here on July 25, 1488, like the cross columns at the Cape of Cross . Parts of the original cross, weathered over the centuries, are in the German Historical Museum in Berlin.

Access to the Diaz-Kreuz near Lüderitz has not been possible since mid-November 2014 via the destroyed wooden bridge. The ascent to the cross can therefore only be done at low tide or when the water level is low over the offshore rocks. A new bridge is to be built. [outdated]

Diaz-tip beacon

During the German colonial rule, two beacons were built at the top of the Diaz . The one-story beacon was soon replaced by a slender red and white lighthouse , which has been preserved but is now out of order. More modern techniques such as B. by radio beacon or by means of satellites ( GPS ) are now common aids for navigation in shipping.

The construction of a third, modern lighthouse directly on the coast did not go beyond the shell. This is still (as of 2020).
